Note from SA

My friend Arindom writes from SA - he is on a BPR project there with SA Govt.
-------------
we finally managed to get access to LAN.

The flight was a real good experience! The Emirates is a Premium carrier and 3 of us travelled it because seats were not available. We freaked out on the seat console with over 500 channels to chose form, all sorts of movies, games, and music. You can even play online games with other passengers! The flight was great and with drinks flowing freely you hardly feel a 9 hr flight!

Johannesburg is a startling place. you can be forgiven if you mistake it for some western metropolis. But crime is very high is SA and people, especially outsiders are very very careful. There are everyday instances of mugging, car hijacking, shooting, etc.

We drove down from Johannesburg to Pietersburg ( now called Limpopo) a distance of about 400 kms in about 3:30 hrs. The roads are unlike anything I had every seen. Six lanes in a one way superhighway! and Six lanes inthe other direction. Although we were travelling around 180 kmph, we were pretty "slow" and fancy cars were zooming past us at speeds above 200 kmph! Not to say Superbikes that went past us like bullets. Surely they were going at atleast 250 kmph!!

We are staying at a lodge called Country Blue. With independant cottage-like rooms. Very pleasant and very spacious. SA has a lot of space and there is vast open spaces all around.

The people drive around in huge 4x4 pick-up SUVs. I guess they live in the huge farmlands. We have hired Toyota Corollas, the most common "cheap" car. City people move around in mostly BMW, Mercs and Audis!!

More later.....
Cheers
